A Message on Self-Care, from One Journey to Another
As a therapist, I often speak with people who give so much of themselves to others—family, friends, coworkers—yet often overlook one important person: themselves. While caring for others is a beautiful and meaningful part of life, it can also take a toll on our emotional, physical, and mental well-being if we don’t take time to care for ourselves. That’s where self-care becomes not just helpful, but essential.
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s not just about checking off a to-do list of healthy habits. It’s about creating space for peace, renewal, and balance in your life. It’s about knowing when to pause, when to say no, and when to simply be—to feel your emotions, reflect on your needs, and listen to your inner voice.
For me, self-care begins with mindfulness and staying present in the moment. Like you, I have my own challenges and healing process. I rely on spiritual principles that keep me grounded, and I make time for rest through meditation, prayer, and quiet moments when life allows. I also find strength in moving my body, enjoying my hobbies, and spending time with people who truly care about me.
I share this with you not just as a therapist, but as a fellow traveler on the journey of healing. Taking care of yourself isn’t optional—it’s the foundation for everything else. When we care for ourselves, we are better able to show up fully and authentically—for others, and for ourselves.
So, wherever you are in your process, know this: you are worthy of rest. You deserve peace. And self-care is not something you have to earn—it’s something you are always allowed to claim.
